A third group has expressed disappointment with the Pakatan Rakyat manifesto for having left out its demands, following on the heels of disabled activists and Hindraf.
The Raub Ban Cyanide Action Committee (BCAC), which has been protesting against gold mining operations in Bukit Koman, Raub, said Pakatan should not underestimate the hazards of cyanide, a chemical used in leaching gold.
“I am not very happy… we have all sorts of evidence to support (our argument) on the hazards,” said BCAC vice-chairperson Sherly Hue, when contacted today.
She expressed the hope that Pakatan will include a ban of cyanide in its election manifesto, launched on Monday.
The document contains a ‘sustainable economy’ proposal that promises to close the Lynas rare earths refinery in Kuantan and review Petronas' Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development project in Pengerang, Johor.
However, it does not specifically mention the Bukit Koman gold mine, which the BCAC has been protesting for the past seven years.
In response, DAP political education bureau chief Liew Chin Tong (right), who also sits on Pakatan’s manifesto committee, argued that the spirit of the document is to support a sustainable and green economy.
“We have a bigger picture on supporting environmentally friendly policy and reviewing industries that are hazardous to the environment, but we can’t detail every single case,” he said.
“It doesn’t mean that we won’t review the Raub gold mine project.”
When asked if Pakatan will accommodate BCAC's demand, he said that the matter can be discussed further.
